I have been back in the North Sea working on the M/V Geosund. The Geosund is a DOF owned multi-purpose vessel with two working class ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicle).  It was originally built in 2001.  You can be sure to put on weight while working on the Geosund – the food is nearly always bloody good.

While I was onboard we were in involved in a BP project redeveloping the Valhall oil and gas platform. The BP Valhall oil field is in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea located in 70 metres of water. It was discovered in 1975 with production beginning in 1982 and expected to continue until 2050.

The Valhall oil rig complex consists of five separate bridge-connected steel platforms for living quarters, drilling, wellheads, production and water injection. There are also two unmanned flank platforms, one in the south and one in the north, both about 6kms from the oil field centre.

BP Valhall Oil rig processes 168,000 barrels of oil and 350 million cubic feet of gas per day. The platform is 65 meters high. The oil is piped to Teesside in England via a nearby oil rig. The gas is transported directly via Norpipe pipeline to Emden in Germany.

The helicopter trip out to the Valhall field is the longest helicopter trip you can take to a Norwegian platform.
